Direct answer: Many Australian travel insurers still quote travellers in their 70s, but products, maximum trip length, and medical questions change. Start with eligibility, then screening, then PDS medical limits — not with a “best over 70s” advertisement.
At a glance
- Availability is narrower than at 55.
- Annual per-trip caps bite long visiting-family stays.
- Cruises need a cruise pack and a screen.
- We do not list premiums.
Use this page with the seniors guide and, if relevant, seniors with pre-existing conditions. The over-80s note is the next age band, not a copy-paste.
Typical friction points
- Annual policies with short per-trip caps
- Cruises that need a cruise pack and a medical screen
- Hiking, diving or motorcycle touring treated as adventure
- A new medication that falls inside the look-back period
- A companion aged 68 on a different screening outcome
Quote assumptions (not prices)
We do not publish premiums. When you compare two quotes, write the assumptions down first. A “cheap” number is meaningless if the rows below do not match.
| Assumption | Why it moves the quote | Write yours here |
|---|---|---|
| Traveller ages | Age bands and screening change eligibility | |
| Residency | Most AU products require Australian residency | |
| Destination region | USA / Japan snow / Bali scooters are different files | |
| Exact dates | Duration and season (ski, cyclone, school holidays) | |
| Trip type | Single-trip, annual multi-trip, cruise, domestic | |
| Excess you can pay | A lower premium often pairs with a higher excess | |
| Activities | Snow, scooter, dive, trek, motorcycle | |
| Medical screening | Disclosed conditions can add a variation or an exclusion | |
| Prepaid costs | Cancellation limits should at least match deposits |
If two websites show different prices, check whether they used the same assumptions before you call one a bargain.
Destinations that change the temperature
USA medical price risk, Japan snow, and Pacific island evacuation are the usual Australian later-life files. Open USA, Japan, and Fiji as checklists. Reciprocal-care myths for the United Kingdom still circulate at bowls-club briefings — they are not a policy.
Brands and honesty
Seniors-marketed hubs on this domain are educational, not winners. Ask insurers that still issue at your age for a current quote and PDS. If the situation is complex, a licensed adviser is the right call.
This page is general information. The current PDS decides.
What “still quotes” means
Availability is a yes/no at a given age, destination and duration. A brand that issued at 69 for 45 days in Italy may refuse 45 days in the United States at 72, or may require a shorter trip. That is underwriting. It is not a reason to invent a #1 over-70s table.
Cruises remain popular in this band and remain a two-gate problem: cruise pack plus screening. Hiking days in New Zealand can flip into adventure. A new blood-pressure tablet can sit inside a look-back period.
Write assumptions. Quote. Read the PDS. If the file is complex, a licensed adviser is the next call — help explains why it cannot be this inbox.
