Direct answer: Vietnam from Australia is often a food-and-cities trip or a motorbike loop. Those are different policies.
At a glance
- Ha Giang is not a city-break wording.
- Licence, helmet and engine-size rules apply if you ride.
- Cooking classes and cars still need medical and evacuation.
- Sibling pages: Bali and Thailand.
If you ride, read licence, helmet and engine-size rules. If you only sit in cars and cooking classes, you still want medical and evacuation that can get you to adequate care. Adventure activities is the activity companion.
Bali and Thailand share scooter lessons. Do not assume an “Asia” checkbox covers a northern loop. Cheap premiums deserve cheap cover scepticism.
What this page is not
It is not a hospital recommendation, a visa checklist, or a #1 insurer for Vietnam. Destination pages on this site are cover considerations. Always read the current PDS and Smartraveller.
Quote assumptions (not prices)
We do not publish premiums. When you compare two quotes, write the assumptions down first. A “cheap” number is meaningless if the rows below do not match.
| Assumption | Why it moves the quote | Write yours here |
|---|---|---|
| Traveller ages | Age bands and screening change eligibility | |
| Residency | Most AU products require Australian residency | |
| Destination region | USA / Japan snow / Bali scooters are different files | |
| Exact dates | Duration and season (ski, cyclone, school holidays) | |
| Trip type | Single-trip, annual multi-trip, cruise, domestic | |
| Excess you can pay | A lower premium often pairs with a higher excess | |
| Activities | Snow, scooter, dive, trek, motorcycle | |
| Medical screening | Disclosed conditions can add a variation or an exclusion | |
| Prepaid costs | Cancellation limits should at least match deposits |
If two websites show different prices, check whether they used the same assumptions before you call one a bargain.
Cities versus the loop
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh food trips are medical-and-evacuation files. A Ha Giang or coastal motorbike loop is a licence, helmet, engine-size and adventure file. Cooking classes in a car do not need a motorcycle clause; they still need a policy that can move you to adequate care.
Do not assume an “Asia” tick inherited from a Bali quote. Cheap premiums still trade excess and exclusions.
Planning the Vietnam file from Australia
Write the itinerary you are actually taking, not the brochure photo. For Vietnam, that means dates, cities or islands, cruise or ski days, who is travelling, and what is already paid. Then open two Product Disclosure Statements and search for the activity you will do. A quote that used different ages or a different region is not a comparison.
Medicare does not reliably follow Australian residents to Vietnam. Reciprocal stories, ACC stories, and “the hospital looked modern” stories are not evacuation cover and not cancellation cover. ASIC’s MoneySmart page is the official consumer caution; Smartraveller is destination context. Neither document replaces the PDS.
If anyone on the booking needs screening — a condition, a pregnancy, later life — finish that process before you fall in love with a premium you saw in an ad. We do not publish premiums for Vietnam or for anywhere else. We do not name a best insurer for Vietnam. If a dispute later stalls, AFCA is the external door for most Australian financial firms.
Keep the certificate and the 24-hour assistance number offline before you leave home. A PDF in an email folder is a weak tool in a clinic queue. This page stays a cover-consideration note: useful questions, no hospital recommendations, no invented legal outcomes.
