Budget Direct. Please Don't Use Them.

We have all probably heard of it happening in the broader insurance company community whereby the Insurer deliberately creates delays and generally makes it so hard for the consumers to pursue legitimate claims that the claimants eventually give up. Going on our own personal experiences and by looking at so many other similar instances documented on this site, it is very apparent that Budget Direct are the masters of employing these tactics. We lodged our claim for international flight refunds (flights cancelled by the airline)then followed up several times when nothing happened and were then asked to submit "additional" information (which we had already previously submitted) then chased up again and again. After months of deliberate delays our claim was rejected as the airline, South African Airways (SAA), have offered to anyone holding a cancelled ticket a "credit" against future travel. However as the trip for us was a one-off and we will never be flying long-haul again due to our age and health reasons (further complicated by the advent of Covid 19). Additionally SAA have been placed in something akin to Receivership with the SA Government making a recent commitment to inject funds some funds into a new national carrier. SAA announced that they will not be flying into Australia and have already sold the only planes that were capable of flying that route. So even if we were wanting to fly again we could not use the so-called credit for a flight out of Australia. As a result of all this we then asked that the rejection be reviewed by a Manager/Team Leader in accordance with Stage One of the Budget Direct Dispute Resolution. We were promised written determination within ten business days and then fifteen business days but nothing ever happened well beyond that period. No contact, no apologies just silence. Now after further urging from us we today received an email saying the claim is still rejected even though we had comprehensive cover but we can further challenge the decision by going to Stage 2. Here is how Budget Direct summarised things: "Given the above information, we are only able to provide coverage for items which you are unable to recover from any other source and you must take all reasonable steps to reduce your loss which could possibly lead to a claim. As you have been offered credits for the bookings you are claiming, this is considered as recovering the costs from the source and accepting these is considered a step which you could take to reduce your loss. Therefore the costs are outside the scope of the policy." Apparently according to Budget Direct it doesn't matter that the offered "credit" cannot be used by us or the fact that SAA are unable to provide anyone future flights from Australia it is simply a matter that the airline has made an offer and we according to Budget Direct's interpretation are obliged to accept a worthless offer. Go figure......... So don't be fooled by the cheap insurance quote you may get from Budget Direct as its real value will only be exposed if you have to make a claim. I am writing this to serve as a review for the Budget Direct Travel Insurance. I love to travel because I want to explore different areas around the globe. During my last trip, I wanted to explore the island of Siargao in the beautiful country of the Philippines. They travel, and tours company that I partnered with had some equipment rental that could allow diving in the beautiful ocean of Sohoton. Unfortunately, while we were on our way to the diving site, the boat we were in got hit by a wave, and the diving mask fell from our ship. I paid for it as I rented it, but Budget Direct reimbursed me for my expense because of my insurance policy I availed from them. Of course, I needed to explain a lot to them. But they were reasonable to understand that everything was but an accident, despite efforts or measures to safe keep the item. Four months ago, I made my way to the airport to catch a flight back to Australia from Beijing after attending a conference for my work. Sadly, I figured in an accident. It was a terrible time. I had to be in the hospital for a couple of days to recuperate. After getting stable at the hospital, I called up Budget Direct and informed them about what happened. At first, I doubted that they would cover the expenses. The person that I talked to said he needed to check with his supervisor. However, they agreed to cover the medical and hospital costs during my stay in Beijing. They also included the cancellation of my trip and rebooking. It was not even a long process. My family went to Singapore for our annual vacation. When we visit the country, we usually get tours and packages to make our lives easier. We availed Universal Studios Package and city tours featuring the wonders of Singapore. However, we had to fly back to Australia earlier because of some unfortunate events back at home. We had to cut short our trip and cancel the unused tour packages that we purchased. Because we got ourselves travel insurance under Budget Direct, we got insurance claims for the cancellation of our supposed to be tours and activities in Singapore. We also got some money since we cut our trip short. The people also helped me understood the steps that I needed to take. I am happy with the smooth transaction or process of Budget Direct for me to avail of the claims. I would recommend them to my friends who have prominent families...Read More

When I travel, I know I have peace of mind because I have travel insurance from Budget Direct Travel Insurance. I needed to go to the Philippines for a critical conference set months ago. I had to depart from Australia two days before the start of the conference via a local airline. Unfortunately, they e-mailed me and informed me that my flight was moved to a day later than the original schedule. Upset, I told the travel insurance company about this and suggested that I should take a different route to get there in time for the conference. Budget Direct agreed to cover the alternative transport expenses as part of my insurance policy. Had not this been an option, I would have missed the conference that would affect my personal development because I would wait for the rescheduled flight. I would recommend this insurance policy to people like me who frequently travel for conferences...Read More

I am sharing my experience with Budget Direct Travel Insurance. I went to Thailand two months ago for a vacation. After the plane landed at their airport, I went straight to the luggage conveyor and waited for my stuff. I waited for a long time until all the passengers had claimed their travel luggage. I complained to both the staff of the airport and the airline. To my utmost dismay, they left my luggage in Australia. After telling them how incompetent they were, I went back to my insurance policy. Fortunately, the insurance company understood my concern. I told them that because I had to wait for my luggage, I had to cancel certain hotels and to purchase essentials at the airport while waiting. They agreed to do a refund after I filed the report and submitted the necessary documents. Is there an age limit for purchasing any of the Budget Direct insurance policies?

Yes, the multi-trip policy is only available for travellers under the age of 70, while the single-trip policy is valid for travellers under the age of 100.

Will I be covered for medical expenses?

Yes, their comprehensive policy does cover overseas medical expenses, as well as 24/7 international emergency care.

How many people can one policy cover?

You can cover up to 10 travelers on one policy when purchasing online. To add more, call Budget Direct travel insurance directly.

Do kids get free cover?

Yep! Kids under the age of 18 get free cover when accompanied by a parent or grandparent during the trip.

Does the policy include cover for winter sports and skiing equipment?
