Travelling with a disability — insurance tips

Insurance will not rebuild an inaccessible hotel. It can, if disclosed and accepted, respond to medical equipment, cancellation and emergency care.

General information only. Not personal advice and not a PDS. Policy wordings, excesses, age limits, medical screening and exclusions change. Read the current Product Disclosure Statement and confirm cover with the insurer before you buy.

  • Disclose equipment
  • Access ≠ PDS
  • Evacuation definition
  • Not NDIS advice

Direct answer: Travel insurance for people with disability is still travel insurance: disclose relevant conditions and equipment, check cancellation if access fails, and do not confuse airline or hotel accessibility promises with PDS benefits.

At a glance

  • Insurance will not rebuild an inaccessible hotel.
  • Equipment limits and hire-replacement benefits vary.
  • Assistance animals are often poorly addressed.
  • “Nearest adequate facility” may not be your preferred hospital.

Practical checks

  • Mobility equipment limits and hire-replacement benefits
  • Whether an assistance animal is addressed (often poorly)
  • Pre-existing definitions that capture long-term conditions
  • Evacuation to “nearest adequate facility”
  • Cancellation if a room advertised as accessible is not
  • Companion cover if a support person must change flights

Airline and airport accessibility rules (including assistance at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) are carrier law and policy — not travel-insurance benefits. A hotel’s access statement is a consumer issue that may or may not match a cancellation trigger.

Quote assumptions (not prices)

We do not publish premiums. When you compare two quotes, write the assumptions down first. A “cheap” number is meaningless if the rows below do not match.

AssumptionWhy it moves the quoteWrite yours here
Traveller agesAge bands and screening change eligibility
ResidencyMost AU products require Australian residency
Destination regionUSA / Japan snow / Bali scooters are different files
Exact datesDuration and season (ski, cyclone, school holidays)
Trip typeSingle-trip, annual multi-trip, cruise, domestic
Excess you can payA lower premium often pairs with a higher excess
ActivitiesSnow, scooter, dive, trek, motorcycle
Medical screeningDisclosed conditions can add a variation or an exclusion
Prepaid costsCancellation limits should at least match deposits

If two websites show different prices, check whether they used the same assumptions before you call one a bargain.

Pair with medical guides

Long-term conditions often sit inside pre-existing definitions even when you do not think of them as “illness”. Later-life travellers should also open seniors.

This is not NDIS advice and not medical advice. For consumer insurance education see MoneySmart. We do not rank “best disability insurers”.

Access promises versus insurance promises

An airline can be required to provide assistance at Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. A hotel can advertise an accessible room and fail. Those are consumer and carrier problems. They become insurance problems only if the PDS cancellation or equipment benefits actually match the event. Read those paragraphs; do not assume the Disability Standards rewrite the policy.

Mobility equipment sub-limits can be lower than the cost of a custom chair. Hire-replacement benefits, if any, have their own conditions. Assistance animals are often barely mentioned. Evacuation to “nearest adequate facility” may not be the hospital you and your clinician prefer.

This is not NDIS advice. For insurance education see MoneySmart. For destination context see Smartraveller.
